Steve Drobny

Steve Drobny is the founder of Drobny Capital and leads the firm's asset management, consulting and investment advisory business focused on fundamental discretionary global macro and commodity hedge fund strategies. He is the author of two critically acclaimed books on fundamental, discretionary investing:

  • The Invisible Hands: Top Hedge Funds on Bubbles, Crashes and Rethinking Real Money (John Wiley & Sons, 2010)
  • Inside the House of Money: Top Hedge Fund Traders on Profiting in the Global Markets (John Wiley & Sons, 2006)

Drobny is a thought leader in macro and commodity hedge fund investing, particularly concerning how real money investors (pensions, foundations, university endowments, sovereign wealth funds, family offices, and other asset managers) can implement and optimize external hedge fund allocation programs that improve overall portfolio performance. Drobny is a frequent keynote speaker at industry conferences and often appears in the financial press and media. In addition to advising top real money players, Drobny is an active advisor to hedge funds on launch, business structure, and best practices.

Drobny was formerly with Deutsche Bank in the Hedge Fund Group and also with AIG Trading. Drobny has an MSc in Finance and Accounting from the London School of Economics and Political Science and a BSBA from Bucknell University.

Lawrence Loughlin

Lawrence Loughlin leads the firm's hedge fund manager research efforts for the consulting and investment advisory business focused on fundamental discretionary global macro and commodity hedge fund strategies.

Loughlin was formerly with GAM USA Inc. Trading Funds, where he was responsible for allocating $5 billion across global macro and commodity managers. He is frequently sought out for his extensive experience in sourcing and advising hedge fund launches.

Loughlin was also formerly with Cambridge Associates, an alternative investment research firm. He holds a BBA in Finance from James Madison University.

John Bonaccolta

John Bonaccolta is responsible for manager research and relationships, primarily in Europe, Asia, the Middle East, and Latin America and was previously based in Europe and Hong Kong.

Bonaccolta was formerly an independent journalist covering hedge funds, the macro economy, policy, politics, and broader topics for the Financial Times, The Wall Street Journal, Far Eastern Economic Review, Barron's, Time, and other leading publications. He has reported from Asia, Europe, and the U.S., and has traveled extensively throughout much of Asia and Europe, including stints living in Pakistan and Egypt. Bonaccolta is also the editor of Inside the House of Money and The Invisible Hands.

Prior to becoming a journalist, Bonaccolta was an equity research analyst at Morgan Stanley Dean Witter focusing on telecommunications.

Bonaccolta holds a BA (philosophy and economics) from Bucknell University and holds the Chartered Financial Analyst designation.

Tyler Hathaway

Tyler Hathaway is responsible for firm operations, compliance and operational due diligence. He is the architect of the firm's proprietary portfolio and risk systems and infrastructure that he maintains and manages on an ongoing basis for the firm. Prior to Drobny Capital, Hathaway worked in operations at Dimensional Fund Advisors and Big Sky Capital.

Hathaway has a BBA from University of Colorado, Boulder and holds the Chartered Financial Analyst designation.

Wei Liu

Wei Liu is responsible for risk management reporting and analysis, as well as systems development.

Prior to joining Drobny Capital, Liu worked as a Risk Analyst at Seal Capital, a global macro hedge fund, and Trust Company of the West. Liu holds an MFE from the University of Southern California and a BS in Mathematics from Fudan University. He also holds a Financial Risk Manager distinction and holds the Chartered Financial Analyst designation.
